Each year, over 40 million animals are slaughtered worldwide for their fur, with approximately 85% sourced from farmed animals and the remainder from wild-caught animals. Mink, fox (arctic and red), raccoon dogs, and rex rabbits are among the most commonly bred animals for fur production. These animals are confined to small cages throughout their lives, depriving them of their natural behaviors and needs. The wire flooring in mesh cages causes pain, injury, and suffering, particularly for rex rabbits, whose thin fur coverings offer little protection.

Canada witnesses the largest-scale slaughter of marine mammals for their fur, with approximately 325,000 marine animals killed in 2006 alone. Various brutal methods are employed to preserve their fur, including gassing, lethal injection, electrocution, clubbing, breaking the neck, smashing the skull, slitting the throat, choking, and skinning to death. Leather, derived from animals such as cows, pigs, goats, and sheep, as well as exotic species like alligators, ostriches, and kangaroos, is also tainted by unethical practices.

In China, dogs and cats are slaughtered for their meat and skin, which are then exported globally. Most leather production occurs in developing countries like India and China, where animal welfare regulations are either nonexistent or poorly enforced. Shocking instances of cruelty have been exposed, such as cows having their tails broken and chili peppers and tobacco rubbed into their eyes to force them to walk to slaughterhouses after collapsing from exhaustion.

Leather production also poses significant environmental concerns. It contributes to the environmental destruction caused by the meat industry and the pollution resulting from the toxic chemicals used in tanning. The process of chrome tanning, the most common method, involves the release of carcinogenic chromium (VI) into the water table.

While Europe and America have implemented restrictions on this practice, the vast leather industry in China continues to operate with few regulations, producing leather for numerous luxury items. Despite the availability of non-toxic vegetable dyes for tanning, chrome tanning remains prevalent due to its efficiency and the flexibility it imparts to high-end bags and coats. Disturbingly, the softest and most luxurious leather often comes from the skin of newborn or even unborn calves, cruelly taken prematurely from their mothers' wombs.
